How to get a driving licence in Kosovo: the steps in order
Updated: October 2026
A category B licence comes in three stages: training at a driving school, the theory exam and the practical exam. You then collect the licence at a Document Issuing Centre. Here is every step in order.
1. Check the age
For category B you must be 18. By law, training may start no earlier than six months before the required age (Article 42).
2. Get the medical certificate
The medical certificate for a driving licence is issued by a health institution. You need it to register, for the exam and to collect the licence.
3. Register with a driving school
Choose a licensed driving school and register with your ID card and the medical certificate. The school sends your details to the Ministry of Infrastructure.
4. Attend the theory lessons
For category B the law requires at least 20 hours of theory; at least 15 for other categories (Article 45). You learn traffic rules, signs, right of way, vehicle condition and eco-driving.
5. Pass first aid
First aid is part of the exam programme (Article 59). The course is usually held by the Red Cross and ends with a certificate.
6. Take the theory exam
The theory exam is written or electronic (Article 60). According to driving schools it usually has 30 questions in 45 minutes. Practise for free on Autoshkolla.org with topic tests and the exam-day simulation.
7. Do the practical hours
For category B the law requires at least 20 hours of driving with an instructor; at least 15 for other categories (Article 47).
8. Take the practical exam
For category B the practical exam lasts at least 25 minutes (Article 65). It checks the pre-drive checks, manoeuvres (parking, turning) and driving in traffic.
9. Collect the licence
After passing, apply in person at an MIA Document Issuing Centre with your ID card, the medical certificate and proof of passing the exam. The fee is €15; the urgent procedure costs €50 more (MIA).
